Leek Twinning

On the 5 th November 2015, Leek saw the arrival of a party of Italian people from our twin town of Este, who were to take part in the remembrance services in Leek on Sunday.

This year there were a number of younger people, who on Friday, along with the rest of the visitors and several hosts had an enjoyable day in Blackpool, eating fish and chips and travelling through the lights. This was a very enjoyable day appreciated by the Italians.

Saturday morning saw everyone at the Nicholson Institute where there was an official welcome to Leek from town mayor Ben Emery, ably assisted by the Leek town crier. Speeches and gifts were exchanged from Ben and the Italian mayors of Este and Castelbaldo .

Saturday afternoon everyone was invited to visit Basford Hall Cheddleton, the home of Humphrey and Judy Scott-Moncrieff, where after a cup of tea Humphrey gave a tour of his beautiful home. The Italian visitors found the hall delightful and enjoyed the countryside setting. Many of the visitors attended bonfires at local venues in the evening.

Sunday was the main reason for the visit and together with hosting families the visitors attended the remembrance service at Nicholson war memorial for the laying of wreaths, joining our two countries together in friendship and peace. After the Royal Salute our guests joined with ourselves and the British legion at The Red Lion in the market place, for refreshments. Later they attended a service of dedication at Ball-Haye Green Recreation Ground.

Sunday night a buffet meal was provided for host families, committee members and guests at The Foxlowe Leek. Wetley Rocks Male Voice Choir entertained everyone and then after a delicious buffet dancing was the order of the night to the GNK Disco.

After a very busy weekend, on Monday some of our guest decided to take a trip to Manchester for sightseeing and shopping others spent time with their host families.

Tuesday after a very hectic weekend, with many new friendships being made and good times with old friends, our guests alighted the coach to the airport, another very success and happy liason between Este and Leek.
