Linda J Skellam MCSP
Chartered Physiotherapist

Physiotherapists are trained to treat a wide range of musculo-skeletal conditions, including:

· Spinal problems - low back and neck pain/ sciatica; whiplash; headaches.
· Postural problems, including back care advice;
· Joint pain; tendon, ligament and muscular strains/ injuries
· Work related problems: postural/ repetitive strain injury etc.

Following a detailed assessment, which takes into account every aspect of the current condition, treatment then takes the form of a combination of electrotherapy, remedial massage and joint mobilisations.

· Electrotherapy - to relieve pain and enhance the healing process.
· Massage - to relieve muscle spasm, reduce scar tissue, and accelerate healing.
· Mobilisations - to reduce joint stiffness and relieve pain.

Advice is also given regarding self help measures to assist recovery, and prevent re-occurrence of the problem.

Alternatively, Reflexology can often be used, and is very effective in treatment of all the above conditions.
It is also extremely useful in the treatment of stress, and stress related conditions.

Reflexology has been described as a form of "micro-acupressure", which uses reflex points found within the feet to stimulate the bodies own innate healing processes, the theory being that the feet reflect the body, an d that , subsequently, there are points in the feet to correspond with every area in the body. Stress/ disorder in any particular area will cause a tenderness in the corresponding area/s of the feet; massage of these reflex points then will have a reverse "feedback" effect, stimulating the healing processes through relaxation/ changes in circulation etc.

"About six months ago I contacted Linda in her capacity as a physiotherapist for treatment for a shoulder injury...she suggested Reflexology could help. I was amazed to think that treatment to the feet could have an effect on the shoulders.
Since the first treatment, I've had Reflexology regularly, and the pain and tension in my shoulder, which had been so frequent before treatment commenced, has eased off considerably. Interestingly, I've now never had so much energy. Although sceptical about the entire Reflexology process, I'm now convinced it has helped my shoulder to recover and also helped my body generally with it's balance and energy levels"

(full testimony available on request.)

Reiki is a very gentle, yet powerful, method of healing, which is best understood through experience rather than explanation.
It is an invisible, subtle energy that works on the body, mind and spirit, stimulating the body and assisting it's own natural healing processes.
It can be used to restore and rebalance the body's energies, reducing stress and increasing vitality, and can also be used in the treatment of all forms of musculoskeletal problems.

Linda qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist at Withington Hospital, Manchester in 1977. After some years working in the NHS, during which she gained several years experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions, she trained in Reflextherapy (a form of Reflexology) in early 1989. She subsequently commenced working full time in private practice in 1990.
In 2003 she took a course in Reiki healing, reaching the second degree.
Linda is co-author of a chapter on Reflexology, in the book "Complementary Therapies for Physical Therapists", published by Butterworth Heinnemann
