My mother is currently in Leek visiting her family. She was born and raised in Leek and moved to New Zealand. The last time she was in Leek was 26 years ago. After speaking to her on the phone tonight, she tells me that Leek has changed immensly.
Hope you are enjoying your holiday Mum and we'll see you in a month.
Love, your daughter

Just visiting your site, and wondered how many Leekites know that you are about to lose one of your most popular residents? John Christie - debt collector extraordinaire! - and his wife Ann will shortly be leaving Leek for a life on the coast. I am sure they will be greatly missed by their neighbours in Buxton Road.

One of the Best Sites I have seen. Great new layout. The photographs are wonderful and the whole site is a credit.
I lived in Brown Edge before emigrating to Canada. Went to Leek Westwood, my husband to Leek High. Our daughter was born at Leek and Moorlands Hospital and now live in Toronto. We live on Lake Superior.

Thanks once again.

I visited this site at the recommendation of my sister Linda who is presently Leek Town Clerk.I could not believe the interest in the town and the people who were visiting the website. We must keep up the good work and promote the beauty of the area and the individuality of the residents and be proud of all the interest shown and welcome the visitors to the area!

Well done Leek

Is there anyone who can tell me where to go for help in researching church & civic records in Leek for births, baptisms, marriages, deaths & burials from the late 1800's to very early 1900's? I'm searchg the Tatton & Finn family names from the area. I know at least some of them were Roman Catholic in the 1900's so were perhaps Rom.Cath. earlier also. Thanks.

I am trying to trace a family of Bloor's who lived at a house called "Longfield" on Ladderedge. A male Bloor emigrated to Australia sometime last century (possibly 1920s or 1930s) and his grandson is trying to learn something about his roots. Can you help please?

I am very interested in the technique and history of Leek Embroidery. I believe Thomas Wardle and his wife started the Leek Embroidery Society during the Arts and Crafts period.
I would be grateful if anyone has any information on this subject or knows how I could access the same if they could let me know.

I am a resident in Leek. We have been here for 27 years and just love it. Can't imagine living anywhere else. It is improving all the time. Great to see this web site. It is wonderful. My son-in-law told me about it. He also loves Leek and he is from Cornwall.

I lived in Leek in 1980 and 1981 and have never forgotten it. Coming back in mid July to celebrate with old friends was wonderful. Now that John Fisher has retired from teaching he can devote himself to his mayor's duties full time. George Wiskin's farewell as head of Westwood Highschool was an event not to be missed. I love Leek and am privileged to have made and kept in touch with many friends there. Back soon...

I lived in Leek for several months in 1981. At that time I was assigned at Bode and Son, and I was lodging at The Jester at Leek located in Mill Str. I made a lot of good friends, but after many years I lost contact with them. Can you please let me know how to contact Mr. Tom Barlow and family?. Mr. Barlow was the owner of The Jester. I would also appreciate if I can hear from the Bode family again.
Thank you very much for your time and help.

Hello, my name is John Wint. I am seeking information about my family. I am looking for any one that has my surname. I know that my Great Grandfather, whose name is also John Wint, was born in or around Leek. He had five siblings named Sarah Ann, Elizabeth, Harriet, Rosa Clara and Frank Wint. Leek is such a cosmopilitan little town. I lived there for two years. The houses were so inexpensive and the quality high and you are only minutes away from some of the most beautiful countryside in the country. To cap it all, the people are so friendly too. And yes, it was the only place outside Scotland where I have had deep fried Mars Bars. What a treat !

His name was Cyril Thornley Bailey and he lived in Park Road. While he never went 'back home', he had such fond memories of his hometown of Leek - he is now deceased. Fri, 14 Apr 2000

This is the Bennett family from Moorview Hall Buxton Road, just signing in to say "Hello" and isn't it great that Leek has such a great form of contact with its "ex-pats".
Does anyone logging on have any info or pictures of our home? Built 1914 by the Worthingtons, as a home and prep school. Originally called Moorhill, re-named in 1953, it has also been used as an old people's residence, a hostel for Maltese workers at Brough, Nicholson and Hall Ltd, a children's home and latterly as a family centre.

Hope to hear from someone soon,

Wow, I just discovered this website. Last time I looked (a while ago, mind you), it didn't exist. Anyway, I'm very impressed and must add to the sentiments of one other ex Leek resident, that Staffordshire oatcakes are very lacking here. Also, my stocks of marmite and murray mints are rapidly depleting, so if anyone's coming over, please let me know!! Needless to say, I miss my family, who are mainly concentrated in Leek. Think about them all the time and wish they were here ... in this sweltering heat ... Although I'm now an Aussie citizen, I'm still proud of where I come from and will always be a 'Pom'.

Just received a postcard from friends who have moved to Leek. Since I have never been there and the encyclopedia wasn't helpful, I thought I'd ask Yahoo to take me there. Hooray! What a terrific website. Now when I respond to my friends about their choice of domicile I wont sound like a dumb Yank. Well, less of one, anyway. I'm writing from Berkeley, California (across the bay from San Francisco). This morning the sun came out for an hour and the bay was glorious. Then the storm clouds raced in, the temperature dropped, it rained buckets for two hours and now it has begun snowing lightly on Mt. Tamalpais (adjacent to Bay) around the 1200 ft. level. Golly! If you're planning a trip to San Francisco, don't expect to walk around in shorts. Sunny California ain't.

Greetings:
I have just learned that my ggg-grandmother, Elizabeth Walton, was buried at Leek cemetery on 11 Sep 1884. So, I signed on here to see if there was any information about the cemetery. I would certainly appreciate some information on where the cemetery is located, and how to contact the record office.

Sincerely,

My name is Herbert Brookes, born at 50 Fountain St. Leek, my mothers name was Sarah Ellen Brookes nee Bowcock, her mother, my Grandma Bowcock lived on Grove St., one of her daughters Lena Council nee Bowcock lived a few doors away and made oatcakes mainly at week ends. She had a son Charlie, and a daughter Lena,Aunt Lenas husband Jim had a cobblers business, Grandmas other daughter Alice married Samuel Felthouse a farmer at Lower Hadden, near Meerbrook. I am presently working on family history and welcome any information at all concerning the Bowcock side. I remember that I think it was Grandad Bowcock who was a cavalry man during the Crimea war, and his horse was named Dolly, he was treated for a hand wound by Florence Nightingale. He was later briefly reunited with Dolly after his return home. I am VERY interested in regaining contact with this side of my family!!

A very Merry Christmas to my sister Joan Wooliscroft and all my relatives in and around Leek. Your web
site is wonderful, I especially like the photos, they brought back many memories, for instance the youth hostel
at Meerbrook was in my day my elementary school. Regarding the photo of Upperhulme, we used to take
our horses to the blacksmith's, I think it was the building with the double garage doors. I remember playing in
the water at the waterfall, and walking up the road between Tatton's Mill, listening to all the noise of a busy Mill.
Thank you leekonline.

Found your site by accident! But found some interesting reading,You might want to
look at my website , it is based around ghosts and the paranormal, but other topics are
coming forward soon. You can also search and quick link to other sites, and buy music
AudioStreets online (click on a banner on my page).I might add thatI live in Leek aswell,
so you might want to add my page to your localwebsites link.I have only lived in Leek for

because it contains a ghost that was photographed in LEEK!
