Just had a great holiday in the Leek area. We used this web site to find out about all the various attractions in the area, we didn't have time to see everything so we will be back next year.
This must be one of the best town web sites in the country, keep up the good work webmaster. How about a few more photographs of the beautiful moorland scenery.

Nice to hear about some of the successes when people are tracing friends and family through Leekonline. It makes it all worth while.

A big thanks to your web site. Since, I signed your guest book a year ago, I have been contacted by 3 old friends from school. I attended Westwood Heath in 1979. My family all are originally from Leek and have many friends and family there. If any one has any connection to the Jackson family, I would love to hear from you. They were a large Catholic family. Lived on Park Road. My father was born Michael Terrance Jackson, was adopted and name changed to Kane. He grew up in Leek and married my mother Thelma Pickford, and moved to the US in the 60's. Thanks again for a wonderful web site.

Sincerely,

Carla Kane Stroud

My wife was an evacuee in late sept. 1939 and was billeted with a wonderful family called Mr. and Mrs. Myatt. This family lived in a large house with extensive gardens (requiring at that time two gardeners). Mr. Myatt was an owner of a silk mill in Maccelsfield (?).
We are coming to visit this area during next september and would appreciate if anyone could offer any advise as to where this residence is, if it still is in existence, so that my wife can visit nearby to refresh old memories.

Any and all help will be deeply appreciated.

I don't know about "several" pints of Peddy, I was only 15 at the time!!! lmao

I noticed on the few occasions I have passed through Leek on the way to Stoke that it appears to have "grown" alot. Thinking back, the atmosphere used to be a bit like The Rovers Return. (a bit I said).

Best Leek memory;

Larking about with some trolleys from Normid. We were racing them down Derby street and one lad who shall remain nameless running like hell and letting it rip down the hill past Baileys sports/cub uniform/air pellet shop towards Saint Edwards Street (if my memory serves me correctly) We all jogged back up Derby street trying not to split our spleens with laughter, only to hear a deep growling "OY...you lot!" coming from behind us. Lo and behold, 2 coppers running back up the same street past Baileys pushing the same trolley!
A stupid thing to have done thinking back on it, but hey, I wasn't the guilty party...was I TOMMO! lmao
Damn, I'm getting into this now...the people I could grass on. Watch your replies...I may have some dirt on you!
Anyone wanting to see my life (or how it was 2 years ago seeing as how I have neglected my website updates) can see all the dirty details at: www.scoobys-kennel.co.uk and a handful of New-born Daughter pics at: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andrew.ramsden/

Keep up the good work Webmaster, I may return again some day and buy you a pint.

I am glad all you people out there enjoy my web site, it is very encouraging when it generates so much feedback via the 'guestbook'. In answer to a couple of the previous questions, yes there were two 'Cock Inns' the second one in the Market Place has long since closed down and is now a shop I will try and find a photo' and post it on the web site.
The question about Alan and Jackie (Mellor) yes they did come back to the Cock in Derby Street but left there some time ago, not sure where they went. Andy, The Flying Horse has changed a lot since you use to go in and drink several pints of 'Pedigree' it is now one of the best pubs in Leek.

Keep the comments coming folks

I, too, left my Email address on Leek-on-line and had a few contacts with people from the past. I would like to find an old mate named John Walton, who was at school with me and who came from Longsdon. I think he worked for British Telecom at some stage but I have not seen or heard anything of him for about 40 years! He will be about 57 ish now. I have a question as well. Is there, or was there, two pubs in Leek called "The Cock"? I have recently been told that there was one in Derby Street, and one in Market Place. I can remember the first but not the second as it is many years since I was "home" and I think "old-timers disease" is setting in!

John D. Spooner. (Javea, Spain)

I left my details on here with an email address asking that anyone who knew me and wanted to get in touch to feel free to do so. They did. Blast from the past last week as an old neighbour got in touch. Very nice to hear from them too. I have to say though that anybody wanting to try and make contact or find old school friends might want to try http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk/ It is a fiver for full registration but you can get around it and still allow people to contact you if you have your details on a website like I do. Just put the url in your details! (works out free that way) A fiver!! Scandalous or what? In a week i have had two contacts through it though so its worthwhile for curiosity if nothing else.
I saw in the Leek Post that Lisa Webster has just had a baby recently. Congratulations Lisa on the birth of Kyle. (Someone pass that on if they know her please).
Having read a few of the later comments on "I could never go back to Leek", I agree in some ways, but I miss rolling out of the bird in hand, staggering up to Bubbles, across the road to Yates's, down the market place to the Mucky Duck. Nowadays for me its, ring taxi firm, (check bank balance will stand the hammer of all the travelling), arrive in town centre 20 mins later, enter pub, leave pub, hike miles to next pub, etc etc, find taxi for 2 miles to club, leave club, wrestle for an hour in taxi rank, get into taxi, arrive home 25 mins later minus about £12+ on taxis.
Small town living...it has its good points! lol
While we are onto pubs, I heard a whisper from my brother in Stoke some time back, that Alan and Jacqui that used to run the Flying Horse years ago but left for Ashby de la Zouch, have since returned and are running the Cock Inn. Can anyone confirm this?

Take care Leek.

To the writer from Vancouver, it seems to me that most of the people with fond memories of Leek haven't lived there for many years, I have to side with Claire on this one. I was born and raised in leek , and after an unfortunate incident, moved to weymouth. (near portsmouth for those people who still believe 1 mile is a long way to drive to work). The difference I found in the two areas was incredible, and although I didn't stay in the south of England it made me realize I could not ever live in Leek again. I now live in the USA and haven't been back to the UK in over 8 years.

This is a great site.

My Grandmother Ann Elizabeth Pegg from Leek, came to New Zealand with her father and siblings early in the 1900's I would like contact with family or information about her mother Hannah Hansell born 1864 Onecote, Staffs and died Cheddleton 1890's. I have a picture of a mature woman we believe to be her sister Selina Brown. On the back of the photo is these words - Mrs A. Nixon, Rockadilla Farm, Biddulph Moor and Selina Brown age 58 on 27/12/1926 Also Ann's family, Thomas Pegg married Sarah Bishop 5/2/1853. Their family included my Gt. grandfather Ralph Pegg born Cheddleton 18/3/1863 and died Nelson, N.Z. 12/11/1914 I would really like to hear from anyone in Leek, either family or genealogists.

To Claire I would point out that Portsmouth (where I spent some time in the navy) is a large county borough highly industrialised and a the largest naval base population 230,000 Leek is a small market town on the edge of the largest national park population 19,000, if Leekites want more expensive, larger supermakets they go to Stoke on Trent which takes about 10 minutes less time than to get across town in pompey and as for shopping malls (ugh) and friendliness and interest in your neighbours go hand in hand people only know what you tell them! nuff said.

All the best

Howdy from Texas. I've left message here before and have had a lot of help from some of you. I recently found out a great aunt married a Lovenbury back in very early 1900's. Are there any Lovenburys in town who can claim a Tatton as an ancestor?

Like Zoë, who signed the visitor's book a couple of days ago, I also live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the great things about the visitor's book is the appreciation it gives for the far-flung Leek empire... we've had entries from all over the world. I first signed the visitor's book in July, 1999 (one of the very first entries I think) and since then many, many people have contributed.
There have been a few bitchy comments about Leek (how dare they..!!) but, on the whole, contributions have been positive from current residents and ex-pats alike. Like Portsmouth, referenced in a recent entry, Vancouver is also on the coast.. the Pacific coast... sort of between Alaska and California...!! We not only have the ocean, but the fabulous Rocky Mountains and exotic wildlife such as grizzly bears and whales close by (rather than grizzly people and Wales!!)... and a fusion of almost every culture in the world. However, that doesn't make it "better" than Leek... just different.
Oddly enough, one of the most useful leekonline links for me is the death column in the Leek Post. Not, I hasten to add, out of a morbid curiosity (I don't make a habit of reading obituaries). However, being 57 years old myself, I am starting to recognize more and more entries and, occasionally, I have been able to contact the families - without resorting to a ouija board!! I can usually surprise my brother and sisters (who now live in other parts of England) with news of goings on in the Moorlands.... right here from the Pacific Northwest.
Thanks to this great site and its links to other sites, like the Leek Post & Times, I can still relate to the shenanigans of Leek and Moorlands... even after living in Canada for 30 years. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone from the Moorlands (particularly the Foxt area) who remembers me or other members of the Burston family.

At least my comments sent to the visitors book provoked a response from Harry Barnish. I have revisited Leek on many occasions since moving south,as my mother still lives in the town, and I have never been overwhelmed by the changes referred to. I suppose I have been spoilt living in Portsmouth with its maritime heritage. We have several large shopping developments, the latest being Gunwharf, full of shops and housing, which has been built alongside the harbour on the site of an old naval establishment. The only retail developments that Leek has seen are charity shops and low cost supermarkets i.e. Aldi, Kwik Save and Wilkinsons. Where are the Tescos, Sainsburys and AsdaWalmarts?
I would suspect that people from London are buying second homes in the Leek area purely for its close proximity to the Peak District and property prices being cheaper than those in that area, not necessarily because they are attracted to Leek.
Leek does have one redeeming feature and that is the majority of its residents. It is nice to say hello to a stranger and not be looked at as though you have been released from the local mental hospital! It is pretty amazing if you visit the main shopping centre and say hello to somebody you know. But the downside is every body seems to know your business.

I still enjoy the odd oatcake, with cheese and bacon, which can be purchased from my local Sainsbury Store.

My father, Geoff Cook, was born in Leek in 1926 and sadly departed 12th June 2001. I am interested to hear from anybody who may know something of the family history even though he last lived in Leek in 1949. His mother's name was Evelyn and father Harry and the elder brother Harry was killed during World War 2. Sadly his younger brother Terry is also no longer with us having passed away last year.

Dear all ex Westwood High School - Class of 1989 / 1991

On Saturday 25 June I visited Leek (called for a drink at the Roe Buck Inn) on the way up to visiting my parents and old family home in a neighbouring village to Leek. My name is Melanie Armstrong (nee Simpson). I went to St Edwards Middle School and Westwood High School & Sixth Form (left 6th Form in 1991). I left Leek also that summer to move to Manchester, went to University in Manchester and haved worked/lived up in Manchester for the past 10 years. I bumped into an old school friend, Nicola Denny who suggested that I log on to Leek On- Line and sign the "Leek Visitors Book". We are now trying to organise a boozy reunion night out (around Leek of course!) with all old school mates. In the meantime it would be great to hear from any old pals. I have really lost touch but still obviously visit my parents near Leek and so I am often passing but have never bumped into anyone over the 10 years !!!

Please get in touch for a laugh and some reminiscing !! my e-mail address is:- melanie.c.armstrong@uk.andersen.com

Claire Marchbank is terribly wrong to say that Leek has not changed, the moans and complaints that one reads in LP&T letters are normal in any town and what about the improvements? Leek now has 4 of the latest supermarkets built in the last year or so, old buildings have had £1000's of grant money spent on them and have been renovated to high standards some old mills that were past there use now are converted to flats and old persons residencies, the local trade in antiques is phenominal and thriving she should see the new Britannia Buiding Society buildings and new medical centres built since she left, perhaps she ought to revisit and have a surprise, there's the new golf course etc. etc. perhaps she might look into people from London and such areas buying second homes in Leek and wonder why. All the best to Leek we love it.

I left Leek 14 years ago in1987 to live in Portsmouth and marry my fiancé, a sailor. My maiden name was Claire Tomkinson but my married name is Marchbank. I went to Westwood High School from 1979 to 1986. I am quite pleased to have the ability to read the Leek Post and Times online, but it is quite saddening to see that Leek hasn't progressed and everybody is complaining about the same old things, little has changed.
If anybody reads this and remembers me it would be nice to hear from you my e-mail is

Hope to hear from somebody

Hi everyone!

Just wondered if people were aware of Leek's place in the history of menageries in Britain. Local boy James Bostock joined Wombwell's travelling menagerie, married the boss's niece, and ended up running his own travelling menagerie named Bostock & Wombwell's. It was the last of the big, old-style menageries, touring until the early 1930s when most of the animals were sold to the newly-created Whipsnade.

If there's anyone out there with any information on Bostock, his menagerie, or other travelling menageries please get in touch on:

A short message from the other Leek: in The Netherlands near Groningen. What a surprise to discover this website. So many things are comparable with us and yet so different. I hope the twinning idea will succeed. Here in Holland we are contacting as many organizations as possible to develop small-scale ideas of twinning.

Your website is an example for us!

Behind the Old Tanyard (now a builders yard) at the bottom of the Old Bank was a stream which ultimately flowed under the California car park to the brough park boating pond (now filled in), The stream used to power a large waterwheel. A little further up the valley facing Ball Haye Terrace and backing on to the rosebank street gardens was a small house. It was built of red, white and blue brick. On the front were two stone circular carvings approx 1 metre high. One was of an old man, the other was a youth. There was a large stone approx 6 ft by 2ft between them on it was inscribed
"think as you watch the hours go by ... the time will come when you must die"
It was demolished approx 40 years ago.
I have tried to locate photos of the area showing the building but had no sucess. I am puzzled as to what the building was, certainly not the normal house.

Can anyone help?

Stumbled upon this wonderful idea when trying to find information of Leek. I have traced my ancestors back to the 1600 and they remained in Leek until the 1800. Some may still be there. Their name orginated as Bocock, then went to Boocock and eventually settled on Bowcock. My Grandfather came to Canada in 1904. The line moved from Leek to Derby in 1849 and then to West Leicester in 1882 approximately. Anyone who thinks there may be a connection, I would be very pleased to hear from you.

Thanks for all the news,

I'm so happy to have discovered this great web site a few weeks ago. I have lived in Ontario, Canada for the last 42 years, but have never lost my interest in the country in which I spent the first 21 years of my life.
I lived in Leonard Ave., Baddeley Green for the first 14 years, & Heath House Lane, Bucknall for the rest of the time. But some of my happiest memories are of the many trips made to the Leek and Moorlands area with my parents. The moors still have a magical attraction for me. I have been back many times especially in the last years my mother was still alive, and I always tried to get out to the Leek area at least once.
It's great to be able to look at the Leek newspaper, peek at the web cam photos, etc. Also look to see if the Moorlands photo's have changed at all. Occasionally in the obit's I see that another familiar person has passed on.

Thanks again. Keep up the good work

Yours truly,
Dave Mayer

Leek is a very friendly town. A lot of the people came to Leek after the war. My own mother was stationed with the RAF in Cheadle following the war and met my father. He died some 40 years ago, but my mother remained here with the many friends she had made. Leek is a safe town that I enjoy living in.

I was most interested to be able to look up what is happening in Leek. My grandfather was born in Leek in 1873. Does anyone have connections to the surnames BROOME & JAMES. The BROOMES lived in the building which I now believe is the TSB in the Market Place area. BROOME christian names were Joseph father of- Elizabeth Albert Rose Frederick C William Henry. My grandfather William Henry BROOME came to New Zealand when he was approx. 21 years of age and was the maker of Swandri waterproof garments.
If you can help please contact me at phil.phil@zfree.co.nz

My sister put me on to www.leekonline.co.uk and told me to be sure to look at the wonderful photos of the moorlands there. So I did and goosebumps arose all over me to see all my old cycling haunts again. Marvellous. We now live in Canberra, Australia which is also a beautiful town/small city surrounded by high land - in this case the low ranges of the Brindabellas and here, also, I can be cycling on quiet rural roads in 15 mins or so.
Greetings to everyone who remembers Christine & me in Leek and particularly to all the members of Leek Cyclists' Club. And in memory of DSB, my longtime cycling companion.

I am researching the Sales family history and I know that my Sales ancestors came from Leek. My great great grandfather was Thoms Sales born in 1861 in Leek. I have little information on my Sales ancestors. I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about the Sales family or has any stories about them.

I am trying to help a Stephen Sales in France who is trying to find details on his family. His grandfather William Wardle Sales died Jun Q 1967 aged 79 took over the dyeworks from Thomas Wardle. I have found out a lot about the Silk works for earlier dates and about the history of Sir Thomas Wardle but we do not know why William inherited the works. William Wardle was married to, maiden name Wheawall and they had several children including a David, a John and another William Wardle who died in 1994 born 19-9-1918. Has anyone any connections with either family or knows about the Silk works ? Any help would be appreciated.

Hola Amigos,

I was born and bred in Leek and when I left Leek High School in 1961 (ish) , I joined Staffs Police and left the town. I retired from Staffs Police in 1991 and for the last six years I have lived on the Mediterranean coast of Spain in an old farmhouse amongst the orange groves.
Leek on Line was a wonderful discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the whole site and look forward to updates as they come available.
Anyone who remembers me is welcome to drop me an E-mail.

Hasta luego,

So could anyone tell me anything about the family called Mollatts they came to England from France I think they was connected to the silk trade. I can't seem to find out anything about my gggrandmother she was called Mollatt as far as I know my gandmother was called Elisebeth Ann Evans. The family say there maybe a connection with the name Archer or Archie I have found a Mollatts Wood Road in the area of Ladderedge so maybe this is the area they lived.

Hi I lived in Leek for a short time in 1982.my mum Ann ran the Yates Wine Lodge in the market square and I attended Churnet View School. I was hoping to visit the pub but have recently heard rumors that it isn't there any longer is this correct? I made many friends including a best friend by the name of Elizabeth Sheldon. We wrote to one another for a few years but lost touch in 1989. I would love to hear from her again.
Leek is a lovely town and I have some very fond memories.

Dear fellow Leekies,

I am a mature history degree student looking for information on William Tattons Mill, it closed in the 70's but was then known as Intex Yarns. I have decided to focus my module project work on this mill as it is of personal interest to me, my late Father worked here for some years, also it is Leek based. If you are an ex employee or related to the Tatton family, please get in touch with me. Are there any books on the mill? I do have the Centenary book in my possession. Are there any budding historians with any information? My email is chrisedwards36@hotmail.com or my mobile phone number is 07720602469.

Many thanks for your time.

Residents of Leek may well be interested to know that the stationary Steam Engine which once powered the lace looms at the Wellington Mill in Leek can now be viewed at the Llywernog Silver-lead Mines Museum in Ceredigion (Cardiganshire) Mid Wales! The engine arrived in bits from the Shugborough Hall Museum in about 1978 and has been put back together as a static exhibit. So if you are ever in Mid Wales, come and see a bit of old Leek ! The mining museum is the real thing dating from 1750 with underground tunnels which you can explore. We dress you up as miners to look at the silver-lead veins deep under the hill. Located 11 miles inland from Aberystwyth on the A.44. Tel.

Wonderful site, gets better and better. Any old pictures of a silk mill in the area of Mill Road or nearby? Been researching my grandmothers' family all seem to be from Leek and worked in Mill. 1851 Whites Directory has William Ball, Silk Twister by commission of Mill St, Leek Also list him as manufacturer. Seems most of the family attended St. Edward's Church & some at St. Luke's. Any old pictures of these ? evidently some of the Wm. Ball family lived on Buxton Rd & Thomas Millward family on Union St., Wm. Hersey on Spout St. Trying to find information on a Robert Hersey Balls Death and Burial place. Further to my previous message.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in Longnor/Leek history since my family was centred in the Longnor area from C16th
I am particularly interested in discovering old photographs or prints of the area.
I have indexed the local surnames appearing in the Leek Post in 1898 and a CD is available for personal search in Leek Library.
Searches can be arranged at a small cost to those not able to visit personally by contacting

There are also entires from Leek in the WW1 newspaper photographs index and the Boer War letter index all at the same address.

Hello my name is Carol Whiston. I was born in Leek in 1953 and lived there until 1970 when I moved to the south coast of England - Portsmouth and Southsea - to join my grandmother, Alice Booth. I went to Westwood Hall Girls School between 1965 and 1969 and I would be very interested to hear from anyone else who attended at that time, who might recognise my name! My brother is Neil Whiston whom I believe has been in touch with you already - he lives in Germany and has done since the early 70's.
I still live in the south of England in a village called Church Crookham, in Hampshire. I haven't been back to Leek for such a long time although I still have relatives in the area. I must make a resolution to come back this year.
I look forward to hearing from someone.

Er...have you heard of a little place called Alton Towers? And I'm not sure what you would do almost anywhere in Britain when the weather is, as usual, inclement. Nobody has ever tried to portray Leek as a holiday resort.

In reply to Miniquips question, there's not much I would expect to do in a midlands town in the middle of winter, because, there was little to do at the height of summer when I was there.
I realise that nobody has control over the weather, but, it's what is the alternative when the weather is unclement.

What, exactly, did the Rennies plan to do with a young family, in a midlands town, in the middle of winter anyway? It's not like the website advertises Disney-style amusements, is it?
And how come you folks can answer their sniping but nobody bothered to respond to our messages about Ann and John Christie? I can't believe that nobody knows them, or that those that do wouldn't talk about them.

Unfortunately we cannot control the weather here in Leek. I agree there are some areas of the town which need improving, and improvements are being made constantly, but I believe there are far more good points than bad about the town, and I for one am proud to be a Leekensian. Everyone is entitled to their views, and I'm sure I could find fault with any town in the country if I set my mind to it. As they say: "if you've got nowt nice to say, say nowt"

Theres always somebody whos got to moan about things. The weather may be bad at times, and some buildings could do with a face-lift. But the town is not dirty. You managed to suffer it for a week anyway. Next time instead of moaning, pack your bags jump into the car and bog off to somewhere else.

What a let down. The weather was dreadful, the town is dirty and shabby and there was absolutely nothing to do. We travelled into Stoke and the potteries. Exactly the same (unless you like looking at plates and jugs). What a disapointment. Needless to say, we wont be back

It was wonderful to find Leek on line as I love the town. I was up there earlier this year researching my family tree.
My great grandparents names were William Henry and Leonora Beatrice Beard (formerly Deakin). They lived in Clerk's Bank, Leek. Leonora's parents were Thomas and Ann Deakin (formerly Birch). Thomas Deakin was a Master Cooper and he and Ann lived at 1& 3, Derby Street, Leek. William Henry Beard's parents were James and Hannah Beard (formerly Mathews). James Beard was a Silk Picker.

I would very much love to here from anyone who can help me in my research.

My name is Gill Merison nee Greatbatch, and I am trying to trace my family tree.
I am new to this but have collected a lot of names who do not appear to be my direct ancestors. My grandfather unfortunately I never met, was William Samuel Greatbatch he had brothers Tom, Walter and a sister Annie. William Samuel was born/christened 17.9.1878 His father was Samuel and he was a Gamekeeper. William Samuel was a Gardener he moved to London as a young man and was married there. Annie I believe moved to Ashby de la Zouch and had a daughter who as a child I met. I have lost any contact name/address. I think it is possible that family from the others may still be round and about Leek area.
I would be interested in hearing from any Greatbatch family as I have made contact with others outside of Staffordshire and even outside England in my search.

I have family ties with Leek, through my Dad who left there in 1927.
I visited Leek approximately 9 years ago and just loved spending time in Dad's home area.
I visit your site often and find it great.
I'm not sure whether anyone can help but when visiting Leek I met a lovely young woman by the name of Caroline - cannot remember her surname. She was 18 at the time, had lovely auburn hair and the loveliest happy nature. Her mother's name is Trish and I think from memory works in the office of a local Leek factory shop? Her stepdad worked for a local radio station - I think. I really enjoyed Caroline's company and would so like to contact her and hear what she is doing now.
It's a long shot but if anyone can help I would be very grateful.
I intend visiting Leek again, probably in 2002.
