I heard about this web site when I was in Leek recently.
I left Leek 30 years ago to live in Ashbourne, then
Leamington for a while. Emigrated to Australia for 12 years
and I am now back in Leamington. My name was Kay Goldstraw
before I married. Anyone there who remembers me?

Hello to all in Leek. My great-great grandfather, John
Walton, was a silk ribbon weaver in Leek. He emigrated to
Paterson, New Jersey around 1865 with his four sons. I plan
to come to Leek as soon as I possibly can to visit Leek
Cemetery where my ancestors are buried, and St. Edward the
Confessor Church, where they were baptized.

WoW! On awakening this morning I was greeted by this
year's first snow. On checking the webcam in Leek I saw
green growth on the roundabout. I welcome the snow, ice and
cold but dry winter, with all of the pastimes that it
invites, however, it ain't half dark in the afternoons and
mornings. I will not be travelling to Leek this Christmas
but I'm always reminded of her. The surname Leek is not
uncommon here, coming perhaps from the Nordic word for game
play (Pronounced lek). many other place names in "Our" area
come from the same root. e.g. Thorpe.
Cheers,
Jim Heckle,
Stockholm.

while blundering accidentally into their oil wells." John

Nice to be reminded of some old places and haunts. I
was at Leek High School until 1965. I remember playing rugby
for the under 13's and gained the reputation of being
'chicken' as the sports master always shouted out 'Don't
throw the ball away....' Used to live on Buxton Road, and
formerly went to East Street Primary School. Now working in
Derby, but haven't visited Leek for some time . Thanks for a
good web site - keep up the good work.

I have recently discovered this wonderful site - very
informative and interesting. I taught History at the
Westwood High School before returning to teach in my native
South Wales in 1992. I still harbour fond memories of the
school and the surrounding community.
Best wishes to "old" friends and colleagues!

My name is Chris Dawes. I moved to Leek when I was 4
years old back in the mid 50's. My dad worked at the Co-op
Knitting Mill in Nelson Street. With my brothers we were in
quite a few of the scout shows in the 60's. We delivered
milk with Ryder's farm. I went to Leek High School but sadly
we left Leek and some great friends in 1967. Whilst living
in England I visited Leek many times but I now live in a
town called Bacchus Marsh which is just west of Melbourne in
Australia. I find leekonline really interesting.

100 yrs ago Sgt John Cope of the South Staffs Reg
died while on active service in the Boer War there is no
final resting place for John but there is a Memorial Stone
in St John's Cemetery Wynberg Cape Town. His Army No. was
3009 Sgt John Cope 3rd Battalion South Staffodshire Reg.
His sister Kate married William Barnfather who with his
father also William had a Coach Building business in Leek he
was my Great Grandfather. In the 1891 Census they lived at
44 Wood St .
We also have a photo of the Leek Urban District Council of
1905 in which William Senior served John's mother and father
were John & Therza Cope who lived at 19 Thomas St
Walsall Foreign Stafford.
We have been researching our surname BARNFATHER for many

What a very varied and comprehensive site! Many
congratulations. I'm probably not looking in the right
place, but should I want to buy a house in the area, where
would I look? Whilst I try to find out, I do hope that all
your efforts are appreciated by the majority. Shall visit
agin, thank you.

We have fallen in love with your town and have found
a lovely house on Ashbourne Road which we really wanted to
buy. Unfortunately we have been put off by our survey which
says the house has visable signs of movement. So we were
wondering, and begging,if anyone out there has any local
knowledge of the area that may explain the movement away.
Sometimes things have happened years before ie. during the
war etc. We realise this is really cheaky, but in this age
of communication, why not ask?

Hi,
My daughter told me about Leek online so thought I
would write to see if there is anyone around who remembers
me. My name is Vera Eaton (nee Haycock). I went to East
Street Primary school, then Westwood High School. I worked
at Brittain's Paper Mill until I married and had children.
My husband, Phil, and I emigrated to Perth, Western
Australia in 1967 and have lived here ever since. My two
sisters, Beryl Piwowarski and Janet Brindley also live in
Perth. If anyone would like me to pass a message on to them,
also, I would be happy to do so.
Looking forward to hearing from some of my old friends
soon.
Happy 2001 to all who use Leek online.

Hi there.
Great site ...
I have only discovered this site in the past few
weeks. I use the site to keep up with the goings on in Leek
etc. I have been there many times re holidays and I have
relatives in Cheshire and Staffordshire.
I am looking for relatives of a Mrs Lovatt (now deceased)
previously of Gunn Battery Lane, Biddulph Moor. I saw the
engagements in the Leek and Post Times of a Lovatt and just
thought maybe someone knows the ones I am looking for?
Mrs Lovatt's son David went to Australia around the mid
60's. Mrs Lovatt also had 2 daughters and I think one was
living in Kidsgrove?
I am doing a genealogy study and would love to hear from
anyone who may know the Lovatts I am looking for.
You can contact me via my Email CCEMallat81@aol.com
Thankyou.
Carole.
