Subject: Simpson
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004
I have a friend from New Zealand, whose
grandfather emigrated there around 1910. His name
was Simpson and he was silk spinner from Leek and
she would like to know a little bit more about him.
Anyone any pointers or tips? My friend has visited
Leek, but the street where he lived was demolished
some years ago.
Was his emigration part of a movement away from
the silk industry around the beginning of the 20th
Century?

Subject: Leek Online - a big thankyou...
Here at Moorlands Radio we are evaluating our
trial broadcast ready for the "trial broadcast
report" to be submitted to OFCOM. Local petitions
with over 200 names along with 95 letters of
support have been received for the station so far.
We are working hard behind the scenes to get
Moorlands Radio on the air full time. With the
reaction from people in Leek and the Moorlands,
that should not be too long.
Tony - I'd like to thank you for your support in
helping us publicise the station with the adverts
for our launch date and links to the website - your
website has been an inspiration to us - always
online in the Moorlands Radio studio too!! It's not
always easy setting up something like this,
although, 2003 saw the expansion of Leek-Based
media with "Your Leek Paper" and Moorlands Radio
launching in the same year.
Once again a massive thank-you to Leek-Online
and all it's surfers. See you later in 2004 -
superb website, keep up the good work,

Super town web site!
A William Matthew Wain was born to John &
Hannah Wain of Leek Moor on 4 March 1825.
He was baptized 15 March 1825 at Derby Street
Independent Church. I do have some other info about
Wain families in Leek at this time but I can't tie
in the above family to any relatives.
I would love to contact any researcher having an
interest in this family who were involved in silk
manufacturing.

Subject: Silk workers and stuff...
Good Day to all, wishing all of you a Happy and
Prosperous New Year for 2004!
My Great Grandfather, William Sheldon and his
family lived in Leek on Britannia Street (?),
around the turn of the (last!) century. On his
marriage certificate, he gave his occupation as a
"silk twister". What is or was, a "silk twister"?
Anybody out there who might help?
Also I saw the reference to my Grandfather, Edward
Creathorn, also of Leek - the Footballer. The
correspondent said he'd seen the reference in an
article in the library. Would that be in the
archives of the Leek F.C. or in the Public
Library?
And how might I access that treasure?
Any help would be appreciated,

Subject: SILK MANUFACTURING IN LEEK.
I wonder if anyone can help me. I was recently
talking to my mother about our family history and
she mentioned that her father, Charles Joseph
Wardle used to travel by bicycle from
Burton-on-Trent to Leek to see relatives who were
involved in the Silk trade. She cannot remember who
they were. My Grandfathers parents were Thomas and
Clara Wardle, who I think lived in Hatton,
Derbyshire, and who are buried in Tutbury church in
Staffordshire. My grandfather was born in the
1880's.
Is there a local historian who can help or
anyone who can recommend any books on the history
of silk manufacturing in Leek.
Many thanks.

Subject:- The Knowles family of Leek
Looking for any information on the Knowles
family in Leek. I am related to William Knowles a
local builder who married Hannah Pickford in 1853.
They had three children, Mary b. 1855 Martha b.
1859 and William b. 1865. I think Mary married
William Spearing, a local shopkeeper. Martha, I
think, died in 1892 aged 33 (I think she was a
Milliner and I would suspect her death may have
been related to her job and the use of mercury) and
William who married Mary Gibson in 1888. William
left for the USDA in approx 1893 to seek his
fortune. He had a son William Allen b. 1889.
Any information gladly received.

Subject: Twiggs and Redferns in the Leek
area
Hello,
I am trying to compose a Family Tree and have
traced my maternal family back to James Twigg, born
1864 who married an Alice Redfern in Blore Church
in 1883. They had two children, George Twigg b.
1883 (my grandfather) and Alice Ann Twigg b.1885.
Sadly Alice, the mother, died shortly after the
birth of her daughter but James then married her
sister, Polly (Mary) and several sons and
daughters. My family knew very little about the
second family as my grandfather ran away to the
Great War at the age of 17 and never kept in touch
with his father and step siblings. Alice Twigg
married Sam Elkin and moved away from the area.
Alice Redfern was born in Waterfall and I think her
father, Matthew farmed at Hudhill, Calton. I think
she and her brother Matthew were in service at Lowe
House, Cauldon in 1881 and they had brothers Frank,
David, Thomas, sister Mary and brother John. I
would be very grateful for any information about
either family. My husband and I visited the area
recently and gathered some names from gravestones
but they do not help much.
