Subject: Tracing an old friend

Date: Sat, 31 Jul 2004

I would like to trace an old friend of mine from Leek. His name is David Kerr and he used to live on Windsor Drive. I think he has now moved to London. He will be 42 now. If anyone has a contact address please let me know.

Hi Leekonline.
Just wondering if any one visiting your site is into 'Flight Simulation' and who would like to swop ideas or meet up for a chat? Just so we are not the only raincoats in Leek who have a thing about aircraft.
Thanks a lot and keep up the good work.

Subject: THE CROMBIE FAMILY

My mother was born Jane Baugh born in Leek in 1908. Her parents were Joseph Baugh of Little Sutton and Sarah Jane Baugh (nee Crombie) who was also born in Leek in 1868. My great grandfather was Joseph Crombie and I understand my great grandmother was Mary Crombie (nee Bold). My mother and grandparents moved to Manchester round about 1911 and then to Little Sutton where my grandfather was born.
I know my grandmother had brothers and sisters although I only know the name of one of these - which was Peter. Unfortunately I do not know what became of him. My grandmother, Sarah Jane, was a braide worker at the time of her marriage and I understand that other members of the family worked in the same industry.

I would like if at all possible to hear from any members of the Crombie family.

Subject: Club Day

Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004

Club Day on Leek on Line. It used to be a day to be looked forward to and I remember taking part as a member of 2nd Leek Cubs in about 1950 !
More recently,(?) in about 1979, as a member of Staffordshire Police Mounted Branch, together with a fellow Officer, I led the parade through the streets of Leek Town Centre.
I don't suppose any one reading this has a photograph of that event with the two Police horses on it?

Subject: trying to trace Idris Hughes

Date: Thu, 22 Apr 2004

My mother Eva Johnson is trying to find out what has happened to Idris Hughes, she regularly spoke to him on the telephone until just before Christmas. She knew he had not been well and he said he would be in touch, but we think he must have died. As she doesn't know the addresses of any of his family she would like to know what has happened to him. He was the husband of her long time friend and bridesmaid, who died a number of years ago. If anybody can tell us what has happened we would be very grateful.

Thanks

Subject: History of 'Stone House'

Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004

Im trying to trace the history of Stone House, Basnetts Wood Endon.
I used to live there till 1970 when I migrated to Australia with my parents and brother.
Some Leek people might remember my father, Mr Howard Peters he used to work in Job White's factory till it was burnt down.
If there is anyone who knows any history of this very old house I would be grateful.

Thanks a lot

Subject: GETTING IN TOUCH

Sat, 10 Apr 2004

Hi,

I am a former pupil of Leek High School. I left Leek in December 1980 when I joined the RAF. I have now settled in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. I have just found the web-site and think it is a fabulous idea. I think everyone who is a true Leekite, who has moved away will always miss it. Great people and great place!! Unique!! Can I say hello to some of my former school mates. Helen Ahmed, Sue Goldstraw and Alison Hulme. Great times and great memories!! Anyone wants to get in touch please do!!

THE END OF AN ERA

It is with great sadness that we read of the demise of yet another textile factory in Leek.. I started my working life in textiles at Brough, Nicholson and Hall in Cross Street (now an antiques centre and police station) and remember vividly walking along the tunnel under the road to the dye house every morning. Not for the faint hearted or those afraid of rats and mice!. I also remember braids, corset laces, trimmings, silk woven pictures, woven badges and hopsack ties to name but a few of the items that were made there. I moved to Victoria Manufacturing in Langford Street and remember knitted fabrics, knitted suits, cardigans, string vests and underpants, hats, scarves and gloves. But most of all I remember the people, some of whom have now sadly passed on like the textile industry, and the laughter and tears we all shared.

The mills will all too soon be forgotten unless a museum is set up in Leek similar to the Silk Heritage Museum in Macclesfield so how about it you Councillors or even businessmen. Please don’t let the history of Leek pass away. I am sure there are enough people like myself with memories, and possibly items made in the mills, to provide information for a display which would be of interest to tourists to Leek not to mention the children now growing up in the Leek area who will never have even heard of ‘s’ twist and ‘z’ twist in yarns, braid tenting machines, warp and weft machines.

Leek is, I understand, known as one of the best areas to purchase antiques but let’s not forget what made it unique. Let’s show the tourists our textile museum and the building that still remain like the weavers houses in London Street where you can still see the upper rooms where the work took place.

Is there anyone out there that agrees with my ramblings??

Subject: Trying to contact an old friend

Fri, 2 Apr 2004

Does anyone know the whereabouts of an old friend?

"40 Years On," was the title of our old school song, and it was 40 years ago that I met a young lady from Leek and have often wondered what became of her. Her name was Susan Rotton, and she lived at 5 Grove Terrace. If anyone can help, or if Susan sees this herself, I can be contacted at neil.kennedy@btinternet.com

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help
