Barn owl group celebrate population surge

Volunteers for The Barn Owl Action Group (BOAG), based at Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, monitor a number of nesting sites across the county every year and for 2009 have recorded 91 successfully fledged birds - compared to 31 in 2008.
The Group has seen the biggest population increase in the Staffordshire Moorlands - and is appealing to the public to help them keep tabs on the recent arrivals. BOAG coordinator Helen Cottam explained: "BOAG volunteers monitor the progress of the birds as best they can but members of the public can help us by reporting any barn owls they see to us - especially ringed or dead ones".
"The Trust is currently working with landowners on a project to protect grasslands in the Moorlands and this year's success could be due to the fact that their habitat is being improved, which in turn supports more prey. Voles are the main source of prey and the Moorlands habitat is ideal for them."
To report a barn owl sighting, or for information on the Group's work, contact 01889 880100 or email boag@staffs-wildlife.org.uk or write to

The Leek Group is a local group of the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.
The Group holds monthly meetings and walks in the area and raises funds by a variety of means to support the work of the Trust.
Evening meetings are held at St Paul's Church Centre, Novi Lane, Leek at 7.30pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. There is easy access for wheelchair users and our sound system makes for easy listening.
Trust sales goods, bird nuts and seed are available at our indoor meetings.
We cover the costs of our meetings (i.e. room hire, speaker's fee and advertising) with sponsorship and admission fees so that all the money we raise goes to preserve wildlife habitats in Staffordshire.
Admission to indoor meetings is £2.00 including refreshments, children under 16 free (must be accompanied by an adult).

The group also organises reserve work parties which take place at Swineholes Wood and Rod Wood nature reserves. These provide the opportunity for practical conservation work - this work is not necessarily heavy or difficult to perform! Reserves tasks may vary from month to month. Midweek work parties organised by the Trust HQ are held on every third Tuesday of the month when a roving team of conservation volunteers carry out tasks at any of our nature reserves in the north of the county. For details either ring 01538 300264 or Trust HQ.
